Complete rebar, structural steel & section weight reference — metric & imperial. Covering T8–T40 rebar, universal beams, columns, hollow sections, angles, channels, flat bar, and plate.
Steel weight charts are an essential daily reference for structural engineers, detailers, site managers, quantity surveyors, and steelwork contractors. Knowing the unit weight of steel sections — in kilograms per metre (kg/m) or pounds per foot (lb/ft) — is fundamental to estimating dead loads, specifying lifting equipment, estimating material costs, preparing bar schedules, and completing reinforcement take-offs for bills of quantities.
This 2026 guide is the most comprehensive free steel weight reference available — covering deformed high-yield rebar (T8 to T40) to BS 4449:2005+A3:2016, universal beams (UB) and universal columns (UC) to BS EN 10034:1993, structural hollow sections (SHS, RHS, CHS) to BS EN 10210 and BS EN 10219, equal and unequal angles, parallel flange channels (PFC), flat bar, and steel plate. All tables include both metric (kg/m, kg/m²) and imperial (lb/ft, lb/ft²) values.

Why Steel Weight Estimates Matter in 2026
Accurate steel weight data underpins structural design, cost estimation, logistics, sustainability reporting, and site safety across every steel and reinforced concrete project.
Dead Load Estimates
Structural self-weight is a fundamental component of every load case in Eurocode 2 and Eurocode 3 analysis. Incorrect section weights lead to under-designed or over-designed structures. Accurate kg/m data is essential for every beam, column, and slab design.
Cost Estimating & QS
Steel is priced by the tonne. Quantity surveyors estimate the total tonnage of rebar and structural steelwork from section weight tables to prepare Bills of Quantities, tender estimates, and procurement schedules. An error of 5% in steel weight can cost thousands on a major project.
Bar Schedules & Reinforcement Take-offs
Rebar weight per metre is used directly in bar schedules (BS 8666:2020) to estimate the total weight of each bar mark. This determines order quantities, delivery schedules, and the number of fixing gang days required. Every structural engineer and detailer uses these values daily.
Crane and Lifting Estimates
Site crane operators and lifting supervisors must know the weight of every steel lift — beams, columns, and prefabricated cages — to select the correct crane configuration, establish safe working loads (SWL), and comply with LOLER 1998 lifting regulations. Underestimating steel weight on a lift is a safety-critical error.
Embodied Carbon Reporting
In 2026, whole-life carbon assessments (WLCA) and EPD reporting are increasingly required by clients, planning authorities, and RIBA 2030 Challenge commitments. Steel embodied carbon is estimated as: tonnes of steel × carbon factor (kgCO₂e/tonne). This requires accurate steel tonnage from section weight tables.
Transport and Logistics
Steel delivery vehicles have axle load limits (typically 26 tonnes gross for a standard UK rigid). Knowing section weights allows precise load planning to avoid overloaded deliveries, permit requirements, and transport delays — particularly important for remote sites and those with restricted access.
Steel Weight Formula — How to Estimate Steel Weight per Metre
Understanding the underlying formula allows you to estimate the weight of any steel section — including non-standard sizes not listed in standard weight tables.
Universal Steel Weight Formula (Metric)
Weight (kg/m) = Cross-Sectional Area (mm²) × 7,850 ÷ 1,000,000
Steel density = 7,850 kg/m³(constant for all structural carbon and alloy steels per BS EN ISO 6892-1). This value is used in all standard section weight tables.
For circular bar (rebar):Weight (kg/m) = (D² ÷ 162.2), where D is the nominal diameter in mm. This is the widely used shorthand formula derived from the full estimate.
Example — T16 rebar:Weight = 16² ÷ 162.2 = 256 ÷ 162.2 =1.578 kg/m
Example — T25 rebar:Weight = 25² ÷ 162.2 = 625 ÷ 162.2 =3.854 kg/m
For rectangular / flat sections:
Weight (kg/m) = Width (mm) × Thickness (mm) × 0.00785
Example — 100×10 flat bar:100 × 10 × 0.00785 =7.85 kg/m
For steel plate (weight per m²):
Weight (kg/m²) = Thickness (mm) × 7.85
Example — 20mm plate:20 × 7.85 =157.0 kg/m²
Imperial equivalent formula:
Weight (lb/ft) = Cross-Sectional Area (in²) × 3.4 (steel density factor in imperial units)
Rebar Weight Table 2026 — T8 to T40 High-Yield Deformed Bar (BS 4449:2005+A3:2016)
Weight per metre and total weight per standard bar length for all UK standard rebar sizes. Grade B500B (fy = 500 N/mm²) unless otherwise specified. Density = 7,850 kg/m³.

Steel Grades and Designations 2026 — Structural and Reinforcing Steel
Understanding steel grades is essential for correct specification. Grade affects yield strength and ductility but not density — all carbon steel section weights are estimated using 7,850 kg/m³ regardless of grade.
B500B / Grade 500 — BS 4449:2005+A3:2016
The standard UK reinforcing steel grade for 2026. Characteristic yield strength fy = 500 N/mm². Grade B500B designates: B = reinforcing steel, 500 = yield strength (MPa), B = ductility class (normal). Replaces the old R (mild) and Y (high-yield) designations. All rebar weights in this guide apply to B500B. Grade B500C (high ductility) is available for seismic zones.
S275 — BS EN 10025-2
The standard structural steel grade for general construction in the UK, with a minimum yield strength of 275 N/mm² (for thicknesses ≤ 16mm). Most universal beams, columns, angles, and channels are supplied as S275 unless specified otherwise. The density used for all weight estimates is 7,850 kg/m³. S275JR is the standard sub-grade (Charpy impact at 20°C).
S355 — BS EN 10025-2
Higher-strength structural steel with a minimum yield strength of 355 N/mm² (for thicknesses ≤ 16mm). Specified where reducing section weight or size is important — long-span structures, heavily loaded members, and offshore structures. S355JR, J0, J2, K2 sub-grades reflect Charpy impact temperature. Weight per metre is identical to S275 for the same section designation — only strength differs.
S460 — BS EN 10025-2 / -6
High-strength structural steel (fy = 460 N/mm²), enabling significant section size reductions in heavily loaded structures. Increasingly specified in 2026 for crane girders, offshore structures, and large transfer beams. Welding requires more careful control of preheat and heat input. Available in quenched and tempered (QL) and thermomechanically rolled (M) sub-grades. Same density and weight as S275/S355 sections.
Stainless Steel — BS EN 10088 Grades 304 / 316
Austenitic stainless steel grades used in exposed, marine, and food industry applications. Density = 7,930 kg/m³ (Grade 304) to 7,980 kg/m³ (Grade 316) — approximately 1% heavier than carbon steel. Grade 304 (1.4301) is standard for internal use; Grade 316 (1.4401) for marine or chloride exposure. Weight tables for stainless sections use 7,930–7,980 kg/m³ rather than the 7,850 kg/m³ used for carbon steel.
Weathering Steel — Corten / S355J2W (BS EN 10025-5)
Weathering steels such as S355J2W (Corten A) and S355K2W (Corten B) form a stable protective rust patina that inhibits further corrosion, eliminating the need for paint in many exposed applications. Used in bridges, sculptures, and cladding. Density = 7,850 kg/m³ — same as standard carbon steel. Weight per section is identical to equivalent S355 sections in standard weight tables.
Hot-Formed vs Cold-Formed Hollow Sections
Hot-formed hollow sections (BS EN 10210) are formed at high temperature and typically have a tighter corner radius and more consistent wall thickness — used in primary structure. Cold-formed hollow sections (BS EN 10219) are formed at room temperature and are generally lighter/cheaper for the same nominal size. Weights can differ slightly between hot and cold-formed of the same designation — always verify with the mill certificate.
High-Strength Bolts — Grade 8.8 / 10.9 (BS EN 14399)
Connection bolts in structural steelwork are not included in section weight tables but must be accounted for in total steelwork weight. Grade 8.8 (minimum ultimate tensile strength 800 N/mm², yield 640 N/mm²) is standard. Grade 10.9 is used for high-load friction grip connections. Bolt weights: M16 = ~0.14 kg, M20 = ~0.23 kg, M24 = ~0.40 kg, M30 = ~0.80 kg (including nut and washer).
Pro Tips for Steel Weight Estimate — 2026
Avoid the most common errors in steel weight take-offs and section specification in structural engineering and construction.
Use D²/162.2 for Any Round Bar
The formula Weight (kg/m) = D² ÷ 162.2 works for any diameter circular steel bar — not just standard rebar sizes. It derives directly from the volume formula for a cylinder multiplied by steel density (7,850 kg/m³). For a T32 bar: 32² ÷ 162.2 = 1024 ÷ 162.2 = 6.313 kg/m — matching the table exactly. Memorise this formula for site and design office use.
Always Add Wastage to Rebar Orders
Bar schedules give the theoretical net weight of reinforcement. In practice, add 5% for cutting wastage (off-cuts from standard bar lengths), laps and splices not always captured in the schedule, bending tolerances, and site damage or rejection. For complex elements with many short bars and bends, 7–10% is more appropriate. Never order the net schedule weight — you will run short.
Verify Section Weight from Delivery Note
Steel sections should be weighed at the mill and certified on the delivery note. For large structural packages, compare the actual delivery weight to the take-off weight — a discrepancy of more than ±2.5% warrants investigation. In the UK, structural steelwork is often tendered by weight (£/tonne), making accurate section weight data directly commercial — not just structural.
Don’t Forget Connections in the Weight Take-off
Structural weight take-offs often include only beam and column lengths from the BIM model or drawings. Connection material — end plates, cleats, gusset plates, stiffeners, bolts, weld metal, and shear studs — typically adds 3–8% to the total steelwork weight depending on connection complexity. Always include a connection material allowance in the structural weight schedule for accurate dead load and cost estimation.
Weight Tables Assume Nominal Dimensions
All section weights listed in BS EN 10034 and manufacturer tables are estimated from nominal (theoretical) dimensions. Real sections manufactured to tolerance can be marginally heavier or lighter. For S275 and S355 sections, tolerances are defined in BS EN 10034 (for UB/UC) and BS EN 10210/10219 (for hollow sections). The listed weight is the theoretical weight and is the correct value to use for design, estimation, and scheduling.
Use kN/m Directly in Structural Analysis
To convert kg/m section weight to kN/m for use as self-weight UDL in structural analysis: multiply by 9.807 ÷ 1000. For a 457×191×89 UB (89.3 kg/m): 89.3 × 9.807 ÷ 1000 = 0.876 kN/m. Most structural software accepts density and cross-sectional area directly and estimates self-weight automatically — but always verify the program is using 7,850 kg/m³ (77 kN/m³) for structural steel.
Confirm Bar Availability Before Specifying
Not all rebar sizes are standard stock in the UK. T8, T10, T12, T16, T20, T25, T32, and T40 are the most readily available. T6 and non-standard diameters (T14, T18, T22, T28, T36) may require special order with extended lead times and minimum order quantities. Always check availability with your reinforcement contractor before finalising bar schedules for unusual sizes, particularly on fast-track programmes.
Embodied Carbon — Steel vs Concrete Comparison
In 2026 carbon reporting, primary structural steel has an embodied carbon of approximately 1.5–2.8 kgCO₂e/kg (depending on recycled content — UK electric arc furnace (EAF) steel with ~80% scrap achieves ~0.5–0.7 kgCO₂e/kg). Rebar is typically 0.7–1.0 kgCO₂e/kg. Accurate section weight take-offs are therefore essential for Whole Life Carbon Assessments (WLCA) and RIBA 2030 Challenge reporting on all 2026 projects.

Steel Weight Charts Glossary — Key Terms 2026
Essential terminology for reading and using structural steel weight tables and rebar schedules in 2026 UK practice.
Universal Beam (UB)
I-shaped section with a wider flange than depth — optimised for bending resistance about the major axis. Designated by nominal depth × flange width × weight per metre (e.g. 457×191×89 UB). The most common section for beams and lintels in steel-framed buildings.
Universal Column (UC)
I-shaped section with approximately equal depth and flange width — optimised for axial compression. Designated by nominal depth × width × weight per metre (e.g. 254×254×89 UC). Used as columns, posts, and compression members throughout structural steelwork.
Square Hollow Section (SHS)
Closed square tubular section, typically hot-formed (BS EN 10210) or cold-formed (BS EN 10219). Designated by outside dimension × wall thickness (e.g. 100×100×6.3 SHS). Efficient in biaxial bending and torsion; widely used in columns and architectural exposed steelwork.
Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS)
Closed rectangular tubular section (BS EN 10210/10219). Designated by width × height × wall thickness (e.g. 200×100×6.3 RHS). Efficient in uniaxial bending; used in beams, lintels, trusses, and frames where depth is more critical than width.
Circular Hollow Section (CHS)
Circular tubular section (BS EN 10210/10219). Designated by outside diameter × wall thickness (e.g. 168.3×6.3 CHS). Equal section properties in all directions; used in columns, space frames, bracing, and architecturally exposed structural elements.
Deformed Bar (Rebar)
High-yield deformed reinforcing bar to BS 4449:2005+A3:2016, Grade B500B. Ribbed surface provides mechanical bond with surrounding concrete. Designated by prefix T (tension bar) and nominal diameter in mm (e.g. T16, T20, T25). Replaces old Y (high-yield) designation in UK practice.
Nominal Weight
The theoretical unit weight of a section as estimated from its nominal dimensions and the density of steel (7,850 kg/m³). This is the value listed in all section weight tables and used for design, scheduling, and estimation. Actual delivered weight may vary marginally within manufacturing tolerances.
Bar Schedule (BS 8666:2020)
A document listing all reinforcing bars in a structure, including bar mark, type, diameter, shape code, bending dimensions, number of bars, and total length per mark. Total weight per bar mark is estimated from the unit weight (kg/m) and total length. The current standard is BS 8666:2020 (revised from 2005 edition).
Yield Strength (fy)
The stress at which a steel section or bar begins to deform plastically without further increase in load. Grade B500B rebar: fy = 500 N/mm². S275 structural steel: fy = 275 N/mm² (t ≤ 16mm). S355: fy = 355 N/mm². Yield strength does not affect density — weight tables apply to all grades.
Cross-Sectional Area
The area of the steel section in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, expressed in mm² or cm². Used to estimate: axial capacity (A × fy), weight per metre (A × 7,850 ÷ 1,000,000), and moment of inertia. For rebar: A = π × D² ÷ 4.
Mill Certificate (MTC)
A certificate provided by the steel manufacturer confirming the chemical composition, mechanical properties, and physical dimensions of the steel supplied. Required for all structural steel and reinforcement under BS EN 10204. The MTC confirms the section designation, grade, heat number, and actual section weight where measured at the mill.
Safe Working Load (SWL)
The maximum load a lifting device (crane, chain block, spreader beam) is rated to lift safely. Section weight data is used directly to estimate the SWL required for every structural steel lift on site. Under LOLER 1998, all lifting operations must be planned by a competent person using verified equipment weight data. Never estimate — always use the section weight table value.
Frequently Asked Questions — Steel Weight Charts 2026
What is the weight of T12 rebar per metre and per 6m bar?
T12 high-yield deformed reinforcing bar weighs0.888 kg/m. A standard 6m bar weighs 0.888 × 6 =5.33 kg. A 12m bar weighs 10.66 kg. Using the quick formula: 12² ÷ 162.2 = 144 ÷ 162.2 = 0.888 kg/m. This is one of the most commonly used rebar sizes in UK construction — widely specified for slab reinforcement, column ties, links, and secondary bars. T12 is available in 6m and 12m stock lengths from all major UK rebar suppliers.
What is the weight of a 457×191×89 UB per metre and per 6m length?
The 457×191×89 UB weighs89.3 kg/m(60.05 lb/ft). Per 6m length: 89.3 × 6 =535.8 kg(0.536 tonnes). Per 9m: 803.7 kg. Per 12m: 1,071.6 kg. This is one of the most commonly specified UB sections in UK multi-storey construction and is available from UK steel stockholders includingTata Steel, Macsteel, and NCI. Always confirm stock length availability with your supplier before specifying a non-standard cut length — standard stock lengths are typically 6m, 9m, 12m, and 13.5m.
How do I estimate the weight of a steel plate?
Steel plate weight is estimated using:Weight (kg/m²) = Thickness (mm) × 7.85. For total weight: multiply by the plate area in m². Example — 20mm plate, 2.5m × 1.25m: Weight/m² = 20 × 7.85 = 157.0 kg/m². Total weight = 157.0 × (2.5 × 1.25) = 157.0 × 3.125 =490.6 kg. For imperial: lb/ft² = thickness (in) × 40.8. Standard sheet sizes are 2500×1250mm, 3000×1500mm, and 2438×1219mm (8ft × 4ft). Plates can be cut to size by most steel stockholders.
What is the density of steel used in weight estimates?
The density of structural carbon steel and reinforcing steel is7,850 kg/m³(490 lb/ft³ or 77 kN/m³). This value is universally used in section weight tables and is specified in BS EN ISO 6892-1 and referenced in Eurocode 1 (EN 1991-1-1, Table A.4). Stainless steel has a slightly higher density of 7,900–8,000 kg/m³ depending on alloy type. Aluminium alloys are approximately 2,700 kg/m³ — only 34% of the density of steel for the same volume.
What are the standard rebar lengths available in the UK in 2026?
Standard stock rebar lengths in the UK are6m and 12mfor most diameters. Some suppliers offer 9m lengths for T8–T16. Cut-and-bend services are available from all major reinforcement suppliers (e.g.Celsa Steel UK, Steelway Reinforcement, Express Reinforcements) where bars are cut, bent, and tagged to the bar schedule before delivery. This eliminates site cutting waste and reduces labour cost, but requires more lead time — typically 5–10 working days. Always confirm lead times on fast-track projects.
How do I convert rebar weight from kg/m to lb/ft?
To convert from kg/m to lb/ft, multiply by0.6720. To convert lb/ft to kg/m, multiply by1.4882. Examples: T16 rebar (1.579 kg/m) × 0.6720 = 1.061 lb/ft. T25 rebar (3.854 kg/m) × 0.6720 = 2.590 lb/ft. For US rebar (#5 bar = 1.043 lb/ft) × 1.4882 = 1.552 kg/m. The conversion factor comes from: 1 kg/m = 1 kg/m × (2.2046 lb/kg) ÷ (3.2808 ft/m) = 0.6720 lb/ft.
How is structural steel weight used in dead load estimates?
Section weight (kg/m) is converted to kN/m for use as uniformly distributed dead load (UDL) in structural analysis:kN/m = kg/m × 9.807 ÷ 1000. For a 254×254×89 UC (88.9 kg/m): 88.9 × 9.807 ÷ 1000 =0.872 kN/m. In Eurocode 0/1 framework, structural self-weight is classified as a permanent action (G) and applied with a partial factor of γG = 1.35 (ULS) or 1.0 (SLS). Most structural analysis packages (TEDDS, Robot, Tekla Structural Designer) estimate self-weight automatically from the section database — verify the software is using 7,850 kg/m³.
What UK standards govern structural steel sections and rebar in 2026?
The primary standards governing structural steel sections and reinforcing bar in the UK as of 2026 are:BS 4449:2005+A3:2016(Reinforcing steel — weldable reinforcing steel), BS 8666:2020 (Scheduling, dimensioning and cutting of steel reinforcement),BS EN 10025-2:2019(Structural steel — hot-rolled products), BS EN 10034:1993 (UB/UC dimensions and tolerances), BS EN 10210-2:2019 (Hot-finished hollow sections), BS EN 10219-2:2019 (Cold-formed hollow sections), and BS EN 10056-1:2017 (Angles). Eurocode 3 (BS EN 1993-1-1) governs structural steel design.

For Reference and Guidance Purposes Only
All section weights, dimensions, and data in this guide are provided for general reference and educational purposes only. Section weights are based on nominal theoretical dimensions using a steel density of 7,850 kg/m³. Actual delivered weights may vary within manufacturing tolerances. Always verify section weights from manufacturer mill certificates and product data sheets before using for safety-critical structural estimates, lifting operations, or commercial steel procurement.
Professional Structural Design Required
Section weight data from this guide must not be used as the sole basis for structural design decisions. All structural steelwork must be designed by a qualified structural engineer in accordance with Eurocode 3 (BS EN 1993-1-1) and the relevant UK National Annex. Section selection, connection design, lateral torsional buckling checks, and all limit state verifications require professional engineering judgement and full structural analysis.
Data Current as of 2026 — Verify Before Use
Section tables, standards references, and grade designations in this guide reflect data current as of May 2026. Standards are periodically revised. New sections are added and discontinued sections are removed from producer programmes. Always confirm the current section range and grade availability with your steel supplier and verify against the current edition of the relevant standard before finalising a structural specification. Check theTata Steel Sections product rangefor the current UK section programme.
